Teaching & Learning
At St Leonards Primary School, we are a vibrant learning community where students, teachers, and families work together to build strong foundations for lifelong learning. Our approach combines high expectations with high support, creating a safe, inclusive and engaging environment where every child is empowered to achieve their personal best.
We are committed to nurturing curious, capable learners who have a voice in their learning and a sense of ownership over their growth. Our teaching is guided by the Victorian Curriculum and underpinned by high-quality, evidence-based practices.
The pedagogical approach at St Leonards Primary School is underpinned by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0, which provides a clear framework for high-quality, evidence-based teaching and learning. Within this framework, we implement the Gradual Release of Responsibility model to ensure students move from teacher-led instruction to independent application with confidence. This structured approach supports all learners to build deep understanding, develop essential skills, and take increasing ownership of their learning.
Students are supported to become highly literate, numerate and digitally capable, while also developing the emotional and social skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our structured approach to teaching ensures every child is given the tools they need to succeed, with targeted support and challenge provided at the point of need.
In addition to core classroom programs, students enjoy a rich specialist program that includes Physical Education, Visual Art, Performing Arts, AUSLAN and STEAM. These subjects provide opportunities for creativity, movement, innovation and self-expression, and support the development of the whole child.
Excursions, camps, and strong community partnerships also form a valuable part of our curriculum and help bring learning to life.
