Mathematics
At St Leonards Primary School, we take a purposeful and practical approach to teaching Mathematics. Our goal is to ensure every student develops a strong understanding of key mathematical concepts and the confidence to apply them in real-world situations.
Mathematics at SLPS is taught through explicit instruction of the big ideas in maths, building deep conceptual understanding across number, measurement, space, statistics and probability. Students learn to make connections between concepts and apply their knowledge through a variety of engaging problem-solving tasks.
We use a range of hands-on tools and manipulatives to support student learning, helping to move understanding from the concrete to the abstract. This allows students to visualise their thinking, test strategies, and build flexible, transferable skills.
Our approach encourages curiosity, resilience, and a positive mindset towards maths, empowering students to become confident mathematical thinkers who can reason, model and solve problems in meaningful ways.
